artist biography
Karl (Kåge) Gustaf Ludvig Liefwendal, was born October 2 , 1907 in Engelbrekt, Stockholm. He was a Swedish painter, journalist and composer.
After graduating in Strängnäs in 1928, Liefwendal first pursued music studies while periodically studying art at Otte Sköld's målarskola (painting school) in Stockholm from 1929 to 1933 and with Othon Friesz at Maison Watteau in Paris from 1933 to 1934. During this time in Paris, he took a strong impression of fellow Swedish artist Dick Beer (1893-1938) who had spent many years studying and painting in France.
Liefwendal made his exhibition debut in a group show in Strängnäs in 1935 and then participated in Strängnäs konstförenings (Art Association) exhibitions in 1936.
Liefwendal exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. Select solo shows include three exhibitions in Strängnäs and one at the Eskilstuna Art Museum in 1955. He produced some striking public works including altar paintings for Tofteryd and Åker churches in Småland and glass mosaics for Folkets hus in Åker. He ran his own painting school in Strängnäs 1945–1955. Liefwendal is represented at the Eskilstuna Art Museum and in the collection of the Södermanland County Council.
He was an art and music reporter for Eskilstuna-Kuriren between 1931 and 1934, Nya Dagligt Allehanda from 1942 ti 1944 and Tidningen Folket from 196. Liefwendal published the magazine Vår Konst from 1945 to 1949 and was editor of Svenskt konstnärsgalleri I and II in 1948. He was curator at Strängnäs art association from 1946 to 1953.
Liefwendal was also a pianist and composer. He composed romances and choral works, was conductor in Strängnäs' men's choir from 1961 and Strängnäs' ladies choir from 1963. He gave lectures for the Folkbildningsförbundet.
Liefwendal passed away on August 21, 1982 in Strängnäs.
