artist biography
Hans Sven Rosenquist was born 12 November, 1913 in Malmö. He was a Swedish painter, printmaker, and illustrator.
Rosenquist studied at the Tekniska Skolan in Malmö, followed by study under French artist Othon Friesz (1879-1949) at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in 1947. He took private study trips to France and the Netherlands in 1953 and Italy in 1956. Beginning in 1942 he began exhibiting regularly at the Skånes konstförening (Art Association) Autumn exhibitions in Malmö. His solo exhibitions included his debut in Malmö in 1946 at the SDS Hall, in Kristianstad 1949, in 1951 at the Malmö Museum and in 1955 at Lilla Konstsalongen, Trelleborg in 1951 and in Ystad in 1953.
Rosenquist painted landscapes, still lifes and figure scenes with a loose, sketchy characterisation that dissolves the contour lines. In his oil painting work the colour was heavier, whilst his watercolour paintings were fresher, directly conveying impressions from the sea and beaches.
Rosenquist is represented in a number of public collections including the Malmö Museum and Ystad Museum.
He was a member of the Konstnärernas Riksorganisation - National Artists' Organisation.
He passed away in his birthplace of Malmö on 7 July, 2012.
