artist biography

Tore Wideryd was a Swedish artist born November 22, 1908 in Stockholm.

Wideryd worked initially as a draftsman and gravure printer.  As a fine artist he was largely self taught and took study trips to France, Spain and England. In 1947, he received a scholarship as the first prize at a drawing competition organised by the Stockholm City Museum and the Stockholms Tidningen (Stockholm Times) newspaper.

He exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows throughout his career. Select exhibitions include one with Henry Axelsson and Sune Tjellander at Ateljé Signe Borg in Stockholm in 1944 and with Stig Åkervall at Färg och Formn in 1951. He participated in group exhibitions arranged by Sweden's General Art Association, Swedish Artists' Association and Liljevalch's Stockholm salons.

In addition to painting, he also produced a number of lithograph print editions and a various public art works - painted and mosaic murals. A notable one  at Gröna Stugans titled “Variation on Spanish theme" that he created in 1965. Wideryd had visited Spain after World War II for inspiration, like many other Swedish contemporary artists, and the motif of this mosaic was the sun-drenched landscapes and bustling Spanish folklore he had encountered in his travels. Other mosaics include ones in Finspång from 1955, at apartment blocks in Bredäng in 1964 designed by architect Carl-Edvin Sandberg and at Axel Grape designed Runöskolan designed in 1953.

Wideryd has work in a number of public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm,  Stockholms Stadshus, Eskilstuna Museum, H.M. Konung Gustav VI Adolf’s collection, and the Solna Regional Collection.

Wideryd passed away in Stockholm on August 6, 1992, at the age 83.
