artist biography
Ruth Astrid Harms-Ringdahl (née Hellström) was born June 15, 1912 in Helsinki. She was a Finnish/Swedish artist.
She first studied art from 1928 to 1931 at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm, and then continued study from 1936 to 1942 in Stockholm at the Konsthögskolan (Royal Academy of Fine Arts). Harms-Ringdalh was the recipient of a government arts scholarship in 1954 for two years. She took extensive private study tours to Norway, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Greece, USA, Russia, Sri Lanka and England.
She exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions. Select solo exhibitions include - at Modern konst i hemmiljö (Modern art in a home environment) in Stockholm in 1947, Landskrona 1947, Lulea 1948, Halsingborg 1949 and 1950, Umea 1950 as well as the Konstnärshuset in Stockholm and Vallin's gallery in Örebro 1954. She exhibited in numerous group shows throughout her career including a Unga tecknare (Young Artists) at the National Museum, Nordiska konstnärinnor (Nordic Female Artists) at Liljevalchs konsthall in Stockholm in 1948, shows at Färg och Form, HSB-utställningar exhibitions, several of the Riksförbundet touring exhibitions as well as some of Sveriges allmänna konst-förenings (Swedish Association of Fine Art) exhibitions.
Harms-Ringdahl is best known for her landscapes often with from the Skäne's coastal region of Sweden, as well as figurative, portraits and still life works in oil.
Examples of Harms-Ringdahl's work are held in the collections of Stockholm City Museum, the Norrbotten Museum and the Österlen Museum. Through purchases from the state arts council, her art can be found in many of Stockholm's hospitals.
She passed away at the age of 72 on November 3, 1984.
