artist biography
Johan Axel Götrik Örtenholm was born December 6, 1913 in Kopparberg. Hw was a Swedish painter, illustrator and art educator.

Örtenholm studied at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1931 to 1933 and then at the Kungliga konsthögskolan (Royal Academy of Arts)  in Stockhol from 1933 to 1939. He took several study trips to France where he was influenced by both French Cubism and Picasso.

Örtenholm had several solo exhibitions including the De ungas salong, and Konstnärshuset in Stockholm, Rättviks kulturhus, Galleri Aveny in Gothenburg and in several regional towns. He had a number of two and three artists shows including ones with Gösta Liljedahl in Västerås, with Magnus Creutz and Olle Nordberg in Sollefteå, and with Britta Simonsson and Valdemar Pyysiäinen in Skövde. He participated in several Sveriges allmänna konstförenings (Swedish General Art Association’s) salons and Svenska konstnärernas förenings (Swedish Artists' Association) exhibitions at the Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts) and in the Dalarna Art Association 's salons, in Falun and Liljevalch's Art Gallery's Stockholm salons.

He was a teacher at the  Konstfackskolan (School of Art and Design) in Stockholm from 1956 to 1978. In 1963, he was awarded the City of Stockholm's merit scholarship and a travel scholarship from Lindman's fund at the Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts) in 1965 and a state work scholarship in 1966/67.

He produced public art pieces including a stone mosaic in Dals-Ed, a mural in Tjärnaskolan in Borlänge and a staircase mural in Folkets hus in Eskilstuna as well as work at Televerket in Vänersborg and in Farsta gymnasium. Örtenholm is represented in public collections including work at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the  Dalarnas Museum, Smålands Museum, Jönköpings läns Museum and the Västerås Konstmuseum.

He passed away on September 18, 2005 in Stockholm at the age of 91.
