artist bio
Kurt Valdemar Törnqvist was born April 3 , 1921 in Stockholm. He was a Swedish artist.
Törnqvist studied at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1937 to 1939, and at Signe Barth's painting school in Stockholm between 1946 and 1949. He took study trips to France and Spain. He was awarded a scholarship from the Kungafonden (King's Fund) in 1954. In his early works, he was strongly influenced by the bright colours of Ivan Aguéli, but after his trips to France, his style came to bear more traits of Paul Cézanne. Törnqvist exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions. Solo shows included ones at Galerie Æsthetica, Modern konst i hemmiljö (Modern Art in a Home Environment) in Stockholm and at Lorensberg's art salon in Gothenburg as well as in Torshälla and Södertälje. He exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm’s exhibition Unga tecknare and group exhibitions arranged by Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Sweden's general art association) at Liljevalch's art gallery and in Liljevalch's Stockholm salons. Törnqvist painted landscapes from Österlen, the west coast of Sweden and the Mälar landscape, still life and figurative works.
Törnqvist passed away on November 25, 2008 in Stockholm.
