artist biography
Johan Olof (Olle) Carlström was born October 23, 1920 in Väddö, Stockholm. He was a Swedish painter, print maker and sculptor.

Carlström studied at the Tekniska skolan and Académie Libre in Stockholm as well as at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and with André Lhote in Paris. He took private study trips around Europe.

Carlström exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions throughout his career. Select solo exhibitions include Gummesons Konstgalleri, Stockholm in 1955, 1957 and 1960, Lorensbergs Konstsalong, Göteborg in 1956, Konstakademien, Stockholm inn 1964, Västerbottens lans Konstförening, Umeä in 1964, Sundsvalls Museum in 1964, Castellance Gallery, New York in 1964, New York State University in 1965, Emily Lowe Gallery Hofstra University in 1965, Skövde Konsthall in 1965, Bloomfield Art Association, Birmingham in 1965. He was also included in the exhibition "Mid-West Meets Modern Sweden 1965" held in Chicago.

Group exhibitions include "The London Group" at Burlington Gallery, London in 1954, "La Peinture Nordique Contemporaine 1958” at Galerie Salle Balzac, Paris in 1958, the Riksförbundets för bildande konst vandringsutställning (The Norwegian Confederation of Visual Arts’) show “Romantik i atomäldern” (Romance in the Atomic Age) in 1961, The National Confederation's traveling exhibition, “Ung svensk konst’ (Young Swedish Art), Finland in 1961. "Män-niskan i konsten”, Uppsala in 1962, Mikro-konst, Galleri Hedenius, Stockholm in 1965, Nyköping Museum's anniversary exhibition in 1966, International Exhibition Unesco and Brandei University, Washington in 1966, Vandringsutställning (Travelling exhibition) which showed 1958 to 1959 at Borâs Museum, Örebro Museum, Södertälje Art Association, Falu Konsthall, the County Museum in Östersund and Kiruna Art Guild.

Among his public works, he created a large wall mural at Ljusne Central Library in the 1956.

Carlström is represented in public collections including works held at the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Örebro Länsmuseum, Sundsvalls Museum, Umeà Länsmuseum, Eskilstuna Konstmuseum and in and in Gustav VI Adolf's collection.

He passed away January 22, 2007 in Högalid, Stockholm.
