After graduating from the Köpmannainstitutet (Merchant Institute) in Stockholm, Walterström worked as an interior designer from 1936, then head interior designer decorator 1945 to 1949. Walterström studied art at Berggrens målarskola (painting school) in 1940 and periodically at the Skånska målarskolan between 1953 and 1962. He took self-study during trips to Germany, the Netherlands, France and Belgium. Walterström exhibited in in Helsingborgs konstförenings (Art Association) exhibitions at the Vikingsberg Art Museum and Kulla Artin Höganäs.
