artist biography
Knut Wilhelm (Kvast) Törnqvist was born 13 September 1896 in Söderala, Gävleborg. He was a Swedish painter.
Törnqvist worked at LM Ericsson (phone company) from 1918 to 1922 and studied at night at a private secondary school. In1922 he began studying art at evening classes at Gottfrid Larsson's målarskola (painting school) in Stockholm. In the Spring of 1923 he left his job as a factory worker and studied at the Konstakademie (Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts) until 1929 before continuing his studies in Paris.
He exhibited in solo exhibitions at Modern konst i hemmiljö (Modern Art in the Home Environment), Samlaren, Lilla galleriet in Stockholm, and at Olsens konstsalong and Mässhallen in Gothenburg. Alongside Ragnar Nystedt, he exhibited at Konstnärshuset in Stockholm. He participated in several major group exhibitions, including Exponenterna at Liljevalchs konsthall, Surrealism i Norden (Surrealism in the Nordics) at Skånska konstmuseum, Nordisk Konst (Nordic Art) in Helsinki, and he exhibited in group exhibitions arranged by the Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Swedish General Art Association) and Liljevalchs Stockholmssalonger.
He was awarded a scholarship from the PO Winqvist fund from the Royal Academy in 1954, the Karlebo Prize in 1961 and the Stockholm City Merit Scholarship in 1962. Törnqvist is best known for his portraits , figuratives works and landscapes. Examples of Törnqvist’s work are held in the collection of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum and the Statens Historiska Museum (State Historical Museum).
Törnqvist was married to textile designer Birgitta Törnqvist (1910–1986) from 1930.
He passed away age in Vällingby at that age of 94 on December 16, 1989.
