artist biography
Karl Erik (Ecke) Hernæus was a Swedish artist born on October 22, 1917 in Karlstad, Sweden.

Hernæus studied at the Tekniska Skolan in Stockholm between 1937 and 1940 and at the Skånska Painting School in Malmö 1947-1948. He then continued his studies with André Lhote (the French artist and influential teacher, writer and art critic) in Paris for two years and 1948. He then further studied in Paris with J. Cavaillès at Académie Julian, and at Académie de la Grande Chaumière . Hernæus also spent periods in both France and Spain painting.

He participated in the exhibitions at Värmland's art associations in Karlstad 1952-1954 and in the ‘Unga Tecknare’ exhibition at the National Museum in Stockholm in 1951. He participated in numerous group shows including the Petit Palais in Paris in 1955, where he exhibited in the ‘Artistes étrangers en France’ show.

Hernæus painted landscapes, still life and figurative works in oil and also with woodcut and drawings in pencil and ink. His art explored the pursuit of an abstract, moderately cubist character. He was a member of the Konstnärernas Riksorganisation (Artists' National Organisation). His work is represented at the Malmö Museum.
