artist biography
Stig Oskar Sandberg born in 1925 in Boden, was a Swedish painter, potter and art teacher.

Sandberg studied art under artist and teacher Isaac Grünewald in Stockholm between 1944 and 1945. He went on study trips to France and Spain during the 40's and 50's.

Sandberg was part of a Norrland Artist Group led by fellow artist Helge Linden. He had solo exhibitions in Umeå, a three artist show alongside Montana Lorentz and Jean Carlbrand in Piteå, and two person show with Olle Adolfsson in Nordmaling. He participated in group exhibition with Norrland group at the Norrlandskonst på Nordiska Museet (Nordic Museum) in Stockholm and Norrbottenskonst in Kemi, Finland. He participated in group exhibitions in several galleries alongside fellow Swedish artists Helge Linden, Erik Byström, Fred Andersson and Arne Olsson under the name of Yngre Norrlandskunstnere (Young Norrland Artists).

His subject matter was varied - he gladly painted people in interiors or landscapes, but also portraits (including self-portraits), still life and clean landscapes. In addition to painting in oil he produced ceramic works and drawings.  From 1958 he was employed as a drawing teacher first in Boden and later at the school and vocational school in Piteå. The Havremagasinet Art Gallery held a retrospective of his work in 2013. Stig Sandberg is represented in public collections amongst other institutions at the National Museum in Stockholm.

Sandberg passed away prematurely aged just 36 on October 18, 1961 in Piteå in 1961.
