artist biography
Sven Olof Jakobsson was born November 13, 1917 in Växjö, d. He was a Swedish artist.
Jakobsson studied under renowned Swedish artist Isaac Grünewald. He took several study trips to France and Spain.
He made his debut at the Galerie Moderne in Stockholm in 1947 and had solo exhibitions at Gummeson's konsthall in Stockholm in 1950 and in Norrköping in 1952. He also participated in group exhibitions, including the Nordiska konstnärsförbundets (Nordic Artists’ Association) exhibition in Stockholm in 1947 and Gummeson's spring salon in 1951.
Jakobsson is best known for his landscapes, still lifes and figure compositions in a style that draws on experiences from the neo-abstract movements and - especially in his later works - in a strongly exaggerated colour scale.
Art critic Torsten Bergmark wrote in the 1950 issue of Ord och bild (Word and Picture):
"Jakobsson has taken up a lot from various directions in the latest French painting, from the circle around Bazaine, but perhaps he has learned most from the old, now relevant cubist Jacques Villon. It is above all the brilliance of colour that he has striven for in connection with these, but above all he showed great independence, impressive purposefulness and interesting experiments. He never completely lets go of the figurative, but often combines naturalistic elements with completely abstract ones, with the intention of achieving higher tensions and new pictorial effects."
Jakobsson passed away in 1952 in Barcelona.
