artist biography
Sven Erik Hellquist was born November 8, 1916 in Julita, Södermanland. He was a Swedish artist and illustrator.
Hellquist studied at Edward Berggren's målarskola (painting school) in Stockholm from 1937 to 1939 , with study also taken at the Académie Julian in Paris 1938/39. He took private study trips to France, Italy and Spain. He had solo exhibitions at Galerie Acté in Stockholm and in Eskilstuna and Arboga. He regularly showed his work in group exhibitions around Sweden.
He is best known for his urban scenes and animal paintings, often with horses. Hellquist is represented in the collection of the Eskilstuna Art Museum.
Sven Hellqvist, as he spelled his name in later years, is the father of the artists Anders Hellqvist and Karin Hellqvist, as well as Erik Hellqvist, former mayor of Katrineholm Municipality, Sweden.
He passed away at the age of 80 on March 21, 1997 in Katrineholm.
