artist biography
Bertil Gatu was born 12 July 1913 in Rättvik, Kopparberg. He was a Swedish painter and print maker.

Gatu studied art at Edward Berggren's målarskola (painting school) in Stockholm from 1937 to 1938 and drawing at the Académie Julien in Paris 1938, and etching and print making at the Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts) under Emil Johanson-Thor and Harald Sallberg. As a painter, he considered himself primarily self-taught. 

He exhibited in group and solo exhibitions. He first exhibited in Örebro in 1941 and regularly exhibited his work in solo and group shows. He is best known for his landscapes, figurative and non-figurative works. He painted with various mediums including oil, watercolour, pastel and acrylic.

Bonniers förlag published a book of his poetry in 1936 titled 'Under Månen’ (Under the Moon).

Gatu is represented in the numerous public collections including the Moderna Musset in Stockholm, Norrköpings Konstmuseum, Dalarnas Museum and Örebro County Museum.

Gatu passed away on 13 December, 1984.
