artist biography
Barbro Cheesman was a Swedish painter and graphic artist born in 1915 in Arvidsjaur.

Cheesman studied at Otte Sköld's (Otte Skölds målarskola) and also under André Lhote. She undertook study trips abroad including ones to Paris in 1939 and 1950, to France 1946-47, and to Copenhagen in 1945-46. She was married to artist Walter Persson.

She had solo shows at the Västerbotten Museum in 1946 and at the County Museum in Östersund in 1950. Together with Person and two French artist friends they exhibited at Galerie Duncan in Paris in 1950 and at the Svartbrödraklostre in Lund in 1952.

Cheesman  painted portraits, figures and still lifes works in oil. As a graphic artist, she created decorative monotypes and colour woodcuts, sometimes of a semi-abstract nature.

Examples of Cheesman’s work are held in public collections in Sweden including Malmö Museum and Museum in Östersund.

She passed away in 1993.
