artist biography
Maj-Britt Ebba Maria Sjöstrand-Pettersson, was born 5 September 1927 in Gothenburg. She was a Swedish painter, printmaker and actress.  

She was the daughter of the book publisher Oscar Sjöstrand and the singer Ebba Larsson and the sister of the poet and Academy member Östen Sjöstrand and the artist Larsinge Sjöstrand. She grew up in an artistically stimulating environment and initially trained as an actress at Gösta Terserus Theatre School and at the Gothenburg City Theatre’s acting school from 1948 to 1951, after which she worked at the Gothenburg City Theatre in 1952–53, with the National Touring Theatre (Riksteatern) from 1954 to 1955, and with the Borås Regional Theatre from 1956 to 1958.

Whilst acting she produced woodcuts and did life drawing, and in 1958 devoted herself entirely to artistic work. In 1955–56 she was a special student at the School of the Handicraft Association (Slöjdföreningens skola) in Gothenburg. She initially exhibited her work In 1955 showing alongside Olle Langert at Original Odhner’s Art Club in Gothenburg, and in 1958 she took part with abstract compositions in gouache at the Autumn Salon in Borås. She is best known for her abstract works.

Sjöstrand-Pettersson passed away at the age of 76 on July 24, 2004.
