artist biography
Yngve Birger Gideon Welander, born August 15, 1916 in Nacka, was a Swedish painter.

Welander studied at Grünewald's målarskola and on self-study trips to France, Italy and Spain. He had solo exhibitions in Avesta in 1947, Bollnäs in 1948, Ludvika and Hedemora in 1952, Sandviken, Borlänge and Nynäshamn in 1953. He exhibited at ‘Konst från Uppland’ in Gävle in 1946, and with Sven Linder in Köping in 1956.

His painting from the 1950s were characterised by clearly stylised tendencies with images in limited colour palette. He painted landscapes from the Uppsala area of Sweden and west and east coasts nature scenes from his study trips, as well as still life and figurative works in oil. 

Examples of his work are held in a number of public collections in Sweden including Welander is represented with oil paintings at the Stiftelsen Uppsalahem and Arméns underofficerskola.

Welander passed away in Uppsala at the age of 6 on January 3, 1985.
