artist biography
Gustaf Zage Johanson was born 1 August, 1916 in Högfors, Örebro. He was a Swedish painter, illustrator and print maker.

He studied at the Slöjdföreningens skola (Handicraft Association's school) from 1937 to 1939, then at and at the Valands målarskola (painting school) in Gothenburg from 1939 to 1942. He took study trips to Italy in 1949, France in 1950, and Spain in 1953.

Johanson exhibited widely during his career. Select exhibitions include solo shows in Jönköping in 1953 and 1955. He showed in the ‘Unga tecknare’ (Young Artists) group exhibition at the National Museum in Stockholm in 1944, 1946 to 1948, and 1950. He showed with Smålandskonst at several galleries in Småland, and with Göteborgstecknare in Jönköping in 1952.He exhibited widely during his career. Among his public works is a wooden bas-relief sculpture at the  Bymarkskyrkan church in Jönköping. He initially made a name for himself as a prolific illustrator but then focused on his to fine art.  As an artist he painted interiors, still lifes, figurativee and landscape works in oil, tempera or watercolour, as well as sculptures and drawings.

Johanson is represented in the collections of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the National Museum in Stockholm, and HM King Gustav VI Adolf's collection, Göteborgs konstmuseum, Jönköpings länsmuseum and Jönköpings kommun. In 1993, a memorial exhibition was held at the Jönköping County Museum.

He passed away at the age of 73 on 6 March, 1990 in Jönköping.
