artist biography
Preben Rasmussen was born in Copenhagen in 1919. He was a Danish painter.
Rasmussen started painting from a young age. Though based in Copenhagen he made many trips around Europe, particularly to France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland. He spent a lot of time in Paris where he studied French painters with Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin being significant influences. Paris, particularly Montmartre and Sacré Cœur were favourite subject matters. He painted the same scenes at different times of the day to capture light and mood as the day progressed. In addition to Paris scenes he painted landscapes in Denmark, and still life works. Expressive, thick impasto was a defining element of work. For one exhibition he painted in Paris and brought the works back exhibit in his to his hometown of Copenhagen, where he then started on a body of work featuring Danish landscapes.
He signed his works with the monogram PR.
Rasmussen passed away in 1971.
