artist biography
Voitto Jalmari Vikainen was born on November 11, 1912 in Vehmaa. He was a Finnish artist.
He studied at the Turun Taideyhdistyksen piirustuskoulussa (Turku Art Society's drawing school) from 1933 to 1934 and 1936 to 1937. His works were first exhibited in Turku in 1941.
Vikainen was a painter and a printmaker, but it his woodcuts he is best known for. He worked in a primitivist style and s considered one of the key woodcut artists of the 1940s, along with Vilho Askola, Ina Colliander, Erkki Tantu, Erkki Talari and Tapio Tapiovaara. He came from an artist family - one of three artist brothers, the other two being sculptors Jussi Vikainen and Olavi Vikainen.
He is represented in public collections including works at the Kansallisgalleria - National Gallery of Finland in Helsinki, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
Vikainen passed away at the age of 72 on March 24, 1985.
