artist biography
Niels Mandrup Bruun was born September 12, 1918 in Ribe. He was a Danish painter and print maker.
He graduated from Ribe Cathedral School in 1938. He later joined the resistance movement, which forced him to flee to Sweden in 1944, where he lived for a period in Uppsala with the painter and sculptor Bror Hjorth who facilitated contact with the Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm. Bruun was admitted and studied under Professor Sven Erixson.
After the war, Niels Bruun was able to return to Denmark, where he was admitted to the Kunstakademiet (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen. He studied under Aksel Jørgensen, Elof Risebye, and Vilhelm Lundstrøm, with Aksel Jørgensen in particular having an influence on his artistic career. He received the Neuhausen Prize in 1955 , the August Schiøtt Scholarship in 1960 , the Otto Bache Scholarship in 1963 and the Henry Heerup Scholarship.
Bruun began exhibiting in the late 1940s in solo and group exhibitions. Select solo exhibitions include Ribe Stiftsmuseum in 1949, Athenæum in Copenhagen in 1957, 1959, and 1961, Henning Larsen, Copenhagen in 1964 and 1971. He showed in numerous group exhibitions including with many years at the annual Charlottenborg Forårsudstilling (Spring Exhibition) and Charlottenborg Efterårsudstilling (Autumn Exhibition).
Bruun painted landscape, figurative and stil life works, often mixed with some abstraction. Part of his body of work contained motifs from his home region of Ribe, southwest in southwestern Jutland, Denmark (and the oldest city in Scandinavia).
