artist biography
Karl Harald Garmland was born 6 February 1904 in Katrineholm. He was a Swedish painter, costume, theatrical and set designer.
Garmland studied at Edward Berggrens målarskola (painting schoo) and the Konstakademin (Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm from 1926 to 1928, and during study trips to France, where he attended the Académie Colarossi , as well as the Netherlands and England. He worked as a theatre set designer at the Södra Teatern revue in 1929 and continued over the years with theatre sets for Ernst Rolf at China, as well as the Oscarsteatern, Blancheteatern and the Royal Swedish Opera. He worked for the Swedish Film Institute designed sets and participated in the production of about 25 films.
His is best known for is fine art with figurative works, landscapes and abstracts and a large body of work of theatrical decorations. He exhibited his production and costume designs in Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki and New York.
Garmland is represented in the collections of the National Museum in Stockholm, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Lund University, the Scenkonstmuseet (Museum of Performing Arts), the Museum of Theatre Art in New York and the Music Conservatory in Rio de Janeiro.
He passed away on 3 February 1985 in Oscars församling, Stockholm.
