Gothe was the daughter of Swedish author Richard Gothe and Lydia Sandell. She studied at the Tekniska skolans teckningslärarutbildning between 1930 and 1935 and then undertook a study trips to Italy and France. Gothe had solo shows at galleries in Östersund and Bollnäs and at the De ungas Salon in Stockholm. She exhibited her work in numerous of group shows including ones at Liljevalch's autumn salon , the Nationalmuseum's Unga tecknare (Young Artists) and with the Society for Jämtland Culture in Östersund. She lived half the year in Söder in Stockholm and half the year in Frostviken in northern Jämtland, including Jorm and Stora Blåsjön.

She worked primarily in oil, but also pastel and graphite, and often with a strong abstract element to her works. She also produced colour woodcuts. Best known for her landscapes and portraits, she notably explored the Sámi people and their natural regions.
