artist biography
Bertil Gunnar Gustafsson, born October 21, 1904 in Edeby in Södermanland County, was a Swedish painter.
Gustafsson began his art studies at Larsson's and Berggren's painting school in Stockholm in 1924 with the intention of becoming a sculptor but soon realised it was painting that he wanted to undertake. He continued his studies at the Konsthögskolan (Stockholm Academy of the Arts) between 1925 and 1930, and subsequently during study trips to the Netherlands and France.
His first solo exhibition was at the Eskilstuna Art Museum in 1939 and he went on to have numerous solo exhibitions during his career. He participated in the group exhibition 'Exponenterna' at Liljevalchs Konsthall and many occasions in the exhibition ‘Sörmländsk Konst’. Gustafsson was awarded the Carl Larsson Scholarship in 1930. Among his public works is the larger oil painting ‘Svenskt land’ at Åkers centralskola in Sörmland. He is best known for his paintings in oil with subjects including still life, figurative compositions and landscape paintings from Södermanland, Halland and Öland.
Gustafsson is represented in the collection at the Eskilstuna Art Museum.
He passed away at the age of 81 on September 28, 1986 in Strängnäs.
