artist biography
Wilhelm Alfons (Alf) Maria Sundström was born April 16, 1888 in Nansta, Gävleborg. He was a Swedish painter.

Sundstrom studied at the Konsthögskolan (Art Academy) in Stockholm from 1916 to 1919, and notably winning the Kungliga Medaljen (Royal Medal) there in 1919. After study at the Konsthögskolan, he undertook several study trips to France, Spain and Italy. He had a number of solo exhibitions including shows in Gävle , Sundsvall and Hudiksvall. He is best remembered for his works from the late 1910s through the 1920s. From the years 1917–1919, he painted a large number of Stockholm motifs in restrained moods. In 1919–1922, a number of picturesque Visby views were added and some expressive Hälsinge landscapes. In addition to landscapes he also painted portraits and figure compositions. A memorial exhibition with about a hundred of his works was shown at Gävle Museum in 1962. Examples of Sundström’s work are held in public collections at the Östersund Museum and Gävle Museum.

Sundström passed away in 1961.
