artist biography
Alfred Birger Halling was born January 13, 1907 in Eskilstuna, Södermanland. He was a Swedish painter and print maker.

Halling was self taught as an artist and took study trips to Norway, Denmark, England, Germany in 1936 and 1937, and Paris and Italy in 1949 and 1953. Calling initially painted landscapes early in his career (1932-38), and then subsequently shifted his subject matter to still life and figurative works, often with a strong cubist influence in the 1940s and 50s. His paintings were predominantly in oil but he also worked in gouache. As a print maker he produced colour lithographs and serigraphs. He painted some public art works including a large al secco mural painting that covers the fund wall inside the Västerås city library (1955), in Västerås city hall and at Västmanland County Council.

His debut exhibition was at Galerie Moderne in 1938. Select solo exhibitions include ones at Gummeson's art gallery in Stockholm in 1944 and 1948, Galerie St Lucas in Stockholm in 1946, Linköping in 1948, Göteborg and Eskilstuna in 1950, Norrköping in 1951, and Hälsingborg in 1952.

Examples of Halling’s work are held in public collections in Sweden including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, Östersund Museum, Norrköping Art Museum, Sörmland Museum and Eskilstuna Art Museum.

Halling passed away in 1996.
