artist biography
Sven Ottoson Joann (formerly Johansson) was born March 3, 1908 in Aringsås in Kronoberg. He was a Swedish painter and illustrator.
Joann studied at Wilhelmson's School of Painting between 1925 and 1928, under artists Wilhelm Smith and Albert Engström at the Kungliga konsthögskolan (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) from 1929 to 1930, and then with Otte Sköld in 1931. Between the years 1932 and 1953 he made several study trips to Germany, Italy, France and Denmark where the stay in each country for several months at a time.
Joann exhibited regularly throughout his career. Select solo exhibitions include ones he exhibited at Modern konst i hemmiljö (Modern Art in a Home Environment) in Stockholm, the SDS Hall in Malmö and in Lund, Västerås, Växjö, Sundsvall and together with Gösta Lindell-Kjell exhibited in Ystad. He participated in the National Museum's exhibition Unga tecknare (Young Artists) a number of times and in the exhibition Tre Smålandsmålare (Three Småland Painters) which was shown in Växjö, Sex Smålandsmålare (Six Småland Painters) at Kalmar Art Museum, Konstnärer och glasbruk från Småland (Artists and Glassworks from Småland) which was shown in Lund in 1952, and Nutida småländsk konst (Contemporary Småland Art) at Jönköping County Museum. He participated in group exhibitions arranged by the Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Swedish General Art Association) and local art associations.
Joann was employed as an artistic director at Skruv's glassworks. He was hired by several organizations and institutions to paint portraits, include ones of Johan Alfred Göth, Professor Sven Kjellström and Hugo Alfvén.
He painted figures, still lifes, portraits, cityscapes and landscapes from Småland, Öland, and Italy and worked in a variety of mediums including oil, pastel or watercolour. Joann is represented public collections in Sweden including works held at the Västerås Art Gallery, Jönköping County Museum, Småland Museum in Växjö and at the Art Academy in Stockholm.
Joann passed away aged 77 on October 30, 1985 in Öja, Växjö.
