artist biography
Gerhard Wihlborg was born April 23, 1897 in Löderup, Kristianstad. He was a Swedish artist.
He first trained as a professional house painter in 1912 and then continued his studies in decorative painting for Filip Månsson at the Tekniska skolan in 1916. During this time his interest in fine art was awakened and as a preparation for higher art studies he studied at Althins målarskola (painting school) in 1917 before continuing his education at the Kungliga konsthögskolan (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) from 1917 to 1923. He was awarded the Chancellor's Medal in 1921. During his studies at the Academy he also participated in Axel Tallberg's etching school at the Konstakademin. After a study trip to Italy in 1921 he began exhibiting together with the Skåne Art Association but his breakthrough as an artist did not come until his own solo exhibition at Anderbergs art store in Malmö in 1923.
He has solo exhibitions in Malmö in 1923, 1939, 1941 and 1942, and in Ystad in 1937, 1942, 1947 and 1958, and in Landskrona and in Tomelilla 1951. He was a regular exhibitor in Skåne 's art association's salons in Malmö and as a member of the art association Aura in Lund, beginning in 1928 participated in almost all of the association's exhibitions in Lund, Malmö, Ystad, Trelleborg, Norrköping and Stockholm. He exhibited in The Swedish General Art Association's salons in Stockholm in 1919 and 1939. In 1965 he was awarded the Ystad Municipality Culture Prize.
Wihlborg is known for his still lifes, portraits and outdoor paintings, many of Österlen, a region located in southeastern Skåne, a province in southern Sweden, known for its beautiful natural environment, charming towns, and rich cultural history.
He created a number of public works including a large apse painting - Skolutflykt, in the auditorium of Ystad's higher general educational institution. Examples of Wihlborg’s work is in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Landskrona Museum, Kristianstad Museum, Ystad Art Museum, Trelleborg Museum, Skissernas Museum (Sketch Museum) and in Tomelilla Art Hall.
He passed away at the age 85 on November 4, 1982 in Ystad.
