artist biography
William Mönnich was born on August 29, 1913 in Kristiansand, Norway. He was a Norwegian-Swedish painter, illustrator and designer.
He studied art in Berlin from 1932 to1936, in Oslo in 1936 and1937, in London 1938 to 1939 and in Copenhagen in 1946.
Mönnich had solo exhibitions in Norway in 1946 and 1948 and participated in a number of Norwegian group exhibitions. He branched out and began exhibiting in Sweden (later moving there in the 1950s): in Stockholm at Gummeson's konst galleri 1949 to 1952, at Liljevalch's konsthalli, at Kristianstad's concert hall and in the HSB hall in Stockholm. He continued to exhibit in Sweden after becoming a Swedish citizen in 1955.
During his career he created a number of public works including a mosaic facade on a property in Vällingby in 1954 and a wrought iron portal installation in Östersund in Östersund (1955-56).
He painted summer landscapes, cityscapes, and non-representational works executed in variety of mediums including oil, watercolour, gouache and tempera.
As an illustrator produced work in a number of Norwegian magazines. In addition to being an artist and illustrator, he also worked as an industrial designer producing objects for a number of companies including a range for SM-plast, Skultuna (Sweden) in 1956, and work for renowned manufacturer Gustavsberg in 1957.
His work is represented in a number of public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm.
Mönnich married Swedish artist Isabella Wrangel (1911-1975) in 1950 and they were together until her death i 1975. Mönnich passed away at the age of 76 on October 14, 1989.
